Privacy and Data Handling

Your manuscripts and personal data are handled with care. Here's what you need to know.

Data Storage

Where Your Files Are Stored

All files are stored in Google Cloud Storage (GCS).

File Path Structure

Files are organized with unique identifiers:

Service Storage Path
Translations Organized by user ID and job ID
Proofreading Staging area with unique identifiers
Transcriptions transcriptions/{user_id}/{uuid}.{ext}
Covers Organized by job and output type
Message attachments messages/attachments/{thread_id}/...

Access Control

  • Files are accessed via signed URLs with time-limited expiration
  • Your files are accessed through authenticated account sessions
  • Support staff access is limited to support and operational needs

File Retention

How Long Files Are Kept

  • Translated files remain available in your dashboard while your job data is retained
  • Source files are retained according to operational and support needs
  • Intermediate processing files are cleaned up after job completion

Downloading Your Files

  • Download links are available from your dashboard
  • Links use signed URLs with expiration for security
  • You can download files at any time while they're in your account

Deleting Your Data

If you want your files removed:

  1. Contact support from your dashboard
  2. Request deletion of specific files or your entire account
  3. Deletion requests are processed promptly

Your Rights

You retain full and exclusive rights to all content you upload and receive.

Bookshift makes no claim over:
- Your original manuscripts
- Translated outputs
- Generated covers
- Any other content you create or receive

What This Means

  • You own your translations completely
  • You can publish, modify, or sell your translated works
  • You can use generated covers commercially
  • Bookshift cannot and will not use your content for any purpose other than providing the service

Third-Party Rights

You must own or have rights to any content you upload:
- Only translate books you hold rights to
- Only use covers you have permission to modify
- Only upload audio you have rights to transcribe

Content Policy

What We Accept

Bookshift handles all fiction genres, including:
- Romance (including steamy/explicit)
- Horror
- Thriller
- Fantasy and science fiction
- Literary fiction
- And more

What We Don't Accept

We do not process content that is:
- Illegal in the United States
- Infringing content you do not have rights to

Explicit Content

  • Explicit content is fully supported
  • You don't need to censor or sanitize your manuscript
  • The translation pipeline has specialized handling for explicit sections
  • Cover services may have moderation limits for explicit imagery

We Don't Censor

Bookshift does not:
- Water down your authorial voice
- Remove explicit content from translations
- Impose moral judgments on your work

Security Measures

Authentication

  • Google OAuth 2.0 for secure login
  • Optional email/password login is available for accounts that enable it
  • Session management for account security

Data Transmission

  • All connections use HTTPS encryption
  • File uploads are encrypted in transit
  • API communications are secured

Payment Security

  • Payments processed through Stripe
  • Bookshift never stores your full credit card number
  • PCI compliance handled by Stripe

Infrastructure

  • Hosted on secure cloud infrastructure
  • Regular security updates
  • Monitoring for suspicious activity

Bookshift uses these third-party services:

Your Responsibilities

To protect your account:

  1. Keep your Google account secure - We use Google for authentication
  2. Log out on shared computers - Prevent unauthorized access
  3. Only upload content you have rights to - Respect copyright
  4. Contact support promptly if you notice any suspicious activity
